The art of beauty therapy – by Vicky van der Bank, Somatology and Beauty Therapy Lecturer

The first thing our students think when starting our qualification: “It’s not just about makeup and nails.”

As a lecturer, I am proud to be part of an industry that is currently one of the faster than average growing sectors in the world.

Considering the extent of our qualification where students gain extensive knowledge in anatomy, physiology, nutrition, business management, somatology science and practical therapies, there is unlimited potential and opens doors for every therapist.

After completing my studies, I have been fortunate to have been employed in different sectors in the beauty industry, including working at a world-famous spa in England. What we offer at Potchefstroom Academy is an exciting array of treating clients. Students are exposed to the use of the most modern and and advanced technologies of this profession.

The amount of knowledge, at a Somatologist’s fingertips is amazing. We could do so much more than the basic manicure, pedicure, waxing, body massage and facials. Through research done as a student, I realized how somatologists can create changes in the skin, as well as the incredible power of the human touch. We work with the most heeling tools in the world – our hands.

As a lecturer, it is my mission to gain more knowledge and understanding of how therapy could create changes to the skin and well-being. Not to only look good, but to feel good too. Thus, I believe in the philosophy – “Beauty on the outside… begins on the inside”.

With the philosophy that beauty is more than skin deep and supported with extensive scientific knowledge and the appropriate tools, our students are respected for the valuable service that they offer.

It is my aim, my life mission to share my absolute passion for skincare, and plant seeds of wisdom and caring in my students.
